2014 Initiative: Sierra Leone Village Partnerships
Sierra Leone is a peace loving country and its people have a deep love of education. The people there endured a bloody, eleven year diamond war, instigated by the now imprisoned, ex-president of the neighboring country of Liberia. Many people were killed and maimed. The infrastructure of the country was largely obliterated during the conflict. Sierra Leone is now ranked 180 out of 187 on the UN Developmental Index, below Haiti, Sudan and Afghanistan. It has the 6th worst child mortality rate in the world. Only 25% of the people have access to clean drinking water. Only 38% of children get to go to school. Over 62% of the population lives on $1.25 per day.
In Great Company selected the Sierra Leone Village Partnerships (SLVP), as the initiative for 2014, in an effort to help fund the building of a school in Bandawoh. Hit early during the Rebel War, the village has been without a secondary school building for 20 years.
Throughout the year, the ongoing fundraising efforts of In Great Company included raffles, monthly luncheons, monthly massages, Snack Shack sales, seasonal events, and MediQuant-branded gear sales.
The “Bands for Bandawoh” fundraiser provided dinner, a silent auction, and an evening of entertainment with performances from three live bands. 100% of the net proceeds of the event went to SLVP and 97% of the funding SLVP receives goes directly to the chosen project.
Throughout 2014, In Great Company was able to raise more than $23,000, far exceeding their fundraising goal and fully funding the building of the school in Bandawoh. The Bandawoh School is SLVP’s 10th and biggest project to date. The school will be for 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. It will educate 300 students.
